Why Brisbane Trees Need a Pre-Storm Season Inspection

by | Apr 27, 2026 | Blog | 0 comments

A pre-storm season tree inspection is a professional assessment of the trees on your Brisbane property to identify weaknesses, dead limbs, structural defects, and disease before storm season arrives. Safeway Tree Service has been carrying out these inspections for Brisbane and Logan property owners since 1965, identifying risks before high winds and heavy rain can turn a hazardous tree into property damage — or worse.

Why Storm Season Matters for Brisbane Trees

Brisbane’s storm season runs from October through to late March, bringing some of the most intense weather in Australia. Severe thunderstorms, supercells, and the occasional cyclone bring sustained high winds, heavy rainfall, and sudden gusts that can exceed 90km/h.

For trees, this is brutal. A tree that looks perfectly healthy in winter can be hiding internal decay, weak branch unions, or compromised roots that only become a problem when the wind starts blowing. By the time you can see the issue, it’s usually too late — the limb has already come down.

A pre-storm inspection catches those issues before storm season hits.

What a Tree Inspection Actually Looks At

A proper tree inspection is more than a glance up at the canopy. Our team works through a detailed checklist for each tree on the property:

Structural defects. Co-dominant stems (two main trunks of similar size) are a major failure point in high winds. So are tight branch unions, included bark, and previous poor pruning that’s left the tree unbalanced.

Dead and dying limbs. Dead wood is brittle and breaks easily under wind load. Even a small dead limb can cause significant damage if it falls on a roof, car, or person.

Disease and decay. Fungal brackets, hollow trunks, oozing wounds, and bark splitting are all signs of internal decay. Some species — including many of Brisbane’s eucalypts — can look healthy on the outside while their core has already failed.

Root health. Lifted soil, exposed roots, fungal growth at the base, or recent soil disturbance near the tree all indicate root issues that compromise stability.

Lean and load distribution. A tree leaning toward a house or fence is a different risk than one leaning over open lawn. We assess what’s underneath every tree, not just the tree itself.

Proximity to structures and powerlines. Trees that have grown into power lines, over rooflines, or right next to driveways need closer scrutiny because the consequences of failure are higher.

Brisbane-Specific Risk Factors

A few things make Brisbane trees particularly worth inspecting before storms hit:

Eucalypt drop. Brisbane’s most common shade trees — gums, ironbarks, bloodwoods — are notorious for dropping limbs without warning, especially after long dry spells followed by wet weather. The phenomenon is called “summer limb drop” and it can happen on a still, sunny day. Storm conditions make it dramatically more likely. Read our guide on pruning eucalyptus trees safely for more on this.

Saturated ground. Brisbane’s storm rainfall can dump 100mm+ in an hour. Saturated soil dramatically reduces root anchorage, which is why trees often fall in the days after a heavy storm rather than during it.

Suburban density. In Brisbane suburbs, trees rarely fall in isolation. They fall on houses, sheds, fences, cars, or neighbours’ property — all of which become an insurance and liability nightmare.

When Should You Book Your Inspection?

The ideal window for a pre-storm tree inspection in Brisbane is August through early October. This gives you enough lead time to schedule any required pruning, deadwood removal, or tree removal work before the first storms arrive.

If you’ve left it later than that, don’t skip the inspection — it’s still better to know about a hazardous tree mid-season than to find out the hard way. Same-day emergency tree removal is also available if an inspection turns up something urgent.

What Happens After the Inspection

After we walk the property, you’ll get a clear assessment of what we found and what (if anything) needs doing. That might include:

  • Tree pruning or trimming to remove dead limbs and reduce wind sail
  • Crown thinning to let wind pass through rather than push against the tree
  • Full tree removal for trees beyond saving
  • Cabling or bracing for high-value trees with structural defects
  • A clean bill of health for trees that are sound

We never recommend work that doesn’t need doing. A healthy, well-structured tree is an asset to your property — the goal is keeping it that way, not removing it unnecessarily.

Book a Pre-Storm Inspection Before the Weather Arrives

Safeway Tree Service has been caring for Brisbane and Logan trees for three generations. Our certified arborists know the local species, the local conditions, and what to look for before storm season hits. If you’ve got mature trees on your property — especially anything over 8 metres or anything within falling distance of a structure — a pre-storm inspection is genuinely the cheapest insurance you can buy.
